Espresso Coffee Beans

Our espresso coffee range is made for the machine. From dependable blends to rotating single origins, these coffees are selected and roasted for sweetness, body and balance when brewed as espresso, whether enjoyed black or with milk. They’re brewed across Axil venues every day, ensuring consistency from the roastery to your cup. Choose your espresso coffee beans, dial in your machine and enjoy your coffee just the way you like it.

What Makes a Coffee an Espresso Coffee?

Espresso beans aren’t a separate type of coffee bean. The distinction lies in the coffees we select and how we roast them for espresso brewing.

Espresso brewing forces hot water through finely ground coffee under pressure, usually around nine bars. Because the extraction is concentrated and happens relatively quickly, the coffee needs enough development in the roast to release sweetness, body and flavour within that shorter brew.

At Axil, our espresso roast profiles use a slightly higher final temperature and longer roast duration than our filter coffee. This helps the coffee extract more easily, producing a balanced, full-bodied espresso.

A very light filter roast can be harder to extract well in an espresso machine, resulting in a sharp or sour taste. This reflects how the coffee was roasted for its intended brewing method, rather than its quality.

Choosing Espresso Coffee Beans for Your Setup

The best espresso beans for you depend on your brewing method, how you enjoy your coffee and the flavours you prefer. If you are new to a home espresso machine, or simply want reliable coffee each morning, our coffee blends are an easy place to start.

If you enjoy your coffee with milk, choose a blend with the body and sweetness to complement a flat white, latte or cappuccino. Heavyweight is the fuller bodied choice, while Seasonal gives you a balanced everyday cup that moves with the coffee harvest throughout the year.

If you feel comfortable adjusting your grinder, our Single Origin espresso coffees offer something different. Each lot reflects its producer, farm or region, with fruit notes, florals or acidity that may be more pronounced than in a blend.

Not sure where to begin? The Blend Discovery Bundle lets you compare our three most popular blends, Seasonal, Heavyweight and Pele side by side before choosing your everyday coffee.

Espresso in Milk

A good milk coffee starts with a balanced espresso, complemented by well-textured milk.

Coffee with plenty of body, sweetness and flavours such as chocolate, caramel or ripe fruit will be easier to taste once milk is added. More delicate or floral coffees can still work, but some of their character may become quieter.

For a flat white, cappuccino or latte at home, aim for smooth, glossy milk with fine microfoam rather than a thick layer of bubbles sitting on top. Milk temperature matters too. Overheating can affect its sweetness and upset the balance of your coffee. A little care when steaming can make a difference to your everyday cup.

Why Axil Coffee?

We have been roasting coffee in Hawthorn, Melbourne since 2010. Across the Axil team are two World Barista Championship titles and seven Australian Barista Championship titles. That titles have sharpened the way we taste coffee, understand consistency and work with producers, but the same thinking is applied to the coffee we serve every day.

Our sourcing starts with specialty grade green coffee bought close to harvest. We work directly with producers, with some relationships spanning more than a decade,, giving us a closer understanding of the farms, people and coffees behind each lot. Once the green coffee reaches Hawthorn, we roast to order.

We also have the added benefit of tasting the coffees we roast every day across our 17+ stores. The same coffee is poured across Axil’s own venues every day, giving our roasting and café teams an ongoing connection to how Seasonal is performing in the cup.

For a blend designed to move throughout the year, that feedback matters. We can taste the coffee, adjust and keep Seasonal moving in the direction it should. Fresh harvests, thoughtful roasting and a familiar cup you can count on.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between espresso beans and regular coffee beans?

Espresso beans aren’t a separate variety of coffee. The distinction comes from the coffees selected and how they’re roasted for espresso brewing. Espresso coffee is roasted to produce enough sweetness, body and solubility for the concentrated extraction of an espresso machine, while coffee roasted for filter brewing typically uses a lighter profile designed for longer extraction with more water.

Which Axil coffee is best for a home espresso machine?

If you are new to home espresso, an blend is a good place to start. Seasonal is a versatile everyday option, while Heavyweight offers a fuller bodied cup that works particularly well with milk. If you are comfortable adjusting your grinder and recipe, Single Origin espresso can offer more distinctive flavours to explore.

---

Why does my espresso taste bitter?

If your espresso tastes bitter, it may be over-extracted. Try a slightly coarser grind or reduce the amount of espresso you brew. High water temperatures can also contribute to bitterness. Make one adjustment at a time, then taste before making another.

---

Should I buy whole bean or ground coffee for espresso?

Choose whole beans if you have an espresso grinder at home, so you can make small adjustments as the coffee ages and conditions change. If you don’t have a grinder, choose coffee ground for espresso, keep it tightly sealed and use it while fresh.

---

How much coffee should I use for a double shot?

For a double espresso, 18 grams of ground coffee and 36 grams of espresso in the cup is a useful starting point, a 1:2 brew ratio. Check your machine’s recommended coffee dose, then adjust the recipe to taste.

Which espresso coffee works best with milk?

Coffees with body and sweetness pair well with milk. Our Heavyweight and Seasonal blends both suit milk coffees, with Heavyweight offering a fuller-bodied cup. Single origin espresso can also be a good choice, particularly coffees with rich, sweet or pronounced fruit notes.
